Champions League Semi-final 2nd leg: Chelsea – Real Madrid 2 – 0

Scorers: Werner 28′ , Mount 85′
Line-up: Mendy; Christensen, Thiago Silva, Rüdiger; Azpilicueta (James 88), Jorginho, Kanté, Chilwell; Havertz (Giroud 90), Werner (Pulišić 67), Mount (Ziyech)

Chelsea reached their first UEFA Champions League final since 2012 with a comfortable 3-1 aggregate success against Real Madrid.

A high-tempo opening produced few chances and the tie did not take a decisive twist until midway through the first half. Then Edouard Mendy made a full-length save to thwart Karim Benzema and, shortly after, Chelsea took the lead when Timo Werner nodded in after Kai Havertz’s clipped finish cannoned off the bar.

Havertz rattled the woodwork again shortly after half-time and Mason Mount fired over as the hosts continued to create, but spurn clear chances. Thibaut Courtois kept the Merengues alive with one-on-one saves from Havertz and N’Golo Kanté but his resistance was finally ended when substitute Christian Pulišić crossed for Mount to tap in late on.

Player of the Match: N’Golo Kanté (Chelsea)

Covered a great deal of ground in a very close match. His transitions both from defense to attack and attack to defense were excellent.

Chelsea still have five domestic matches to play before they take on Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League final in Istanbul on 29 May. Four of those are in the Premier League as they bid to seal a top-four finish with the FA Cup final against Leicester (15 May) in the middle of those games.

How many points Chelsea need to win top-four battle against West Ham, Liverpool and Tottenham

Premier League – Matchday 34:  Chelsea 2-0 Fulham

Scorers: Havertz 10, 49
Line-up: Mendy, Christensen, Thiago Silva, Zouma, James, Gilmour, Mount, Chilwell, Ziyech, Werner, Havertz.

A comfortable win with several key players rested ahead of an important game against Real Madrid — Chelsea couldn’t have asked for more. While the top four rivals such as West Ham, Liverpool, and Tottenham Hotspur all have a game in hand, Chelsea has at least given themselves a six-point cushion now. The next league game is going to be a visit to Manchester City’s Etihad stadium, though, and the Blues will still have to work for a top-four finish.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has described Mason Mount as a “full package” after another brilliant performance in the 2-0 win over Fulham. The 22-year-old played a bit deeper than usual on Saturday evening as a No.8 in front of Billy Gilmour and alongside Hakim Ziyech who also played deeper. It did not seem to affect his involvement in the final third, however, as he provided the assist for Kai Havertz’s opening goal after an outrageous first touch.

In addition, to assist, Mount also made four tackles in the 76 minutes he was on the pitch. Tuchel was clearly impressed by the England international — not just his technical ability, but his character as well.

Champions League semi-final 1st leg: Real Madrid v Chelsea  1 – 1

Chelsea was a constant menace early on and Thibaut Courtois had already denied Timo Werner from point-blank range before Christian Pulišić darted in behind the Madrid defense and rounded the goalkeeper to open the scoring in the 14th minute – see the goal in Chelsea highlights.

Madrid was awoken though and Karim Benzema led the fightback, clipping the post from 20 meters then hauling his team level with a thumping volley following Éder Militão’s flick-on.

Both sides were warier after the interval with Zinédine Zidane’s men noticeably more diligent defensively. Substitute Hakim Ziyech tested Courtois from a free-kick and Toni Kroos’ skidding effort fizzed just wide but a third goal in the game rarely looked like materializing.

Player of the Match: N’Golo Kanté
His work in attack and defense was spectacular. He gave balance to the team. He recovered balls in all areas and made great passes between the lines to enable quick transitions. A great game.

Reaction
César Azpilicueta, Chelsea defender: “We started really well. In the first 20–25 minutes, we got the goal and could have scored more. We started with courage and we knew we had to play at our best level. We missed that last pass where we could have chosen the best option.”

Thomas Tuchel, Chelsea manager: “Unfortunately they scored from a set-piece but there was nothing else for us to defend – we did not allow any chances. It was a bit of a disappointing result at half-time and important that we stayed calm and didn’t lose confidence. The speed, the intensity dropped and you could feel that we were a bit tired. We have to live with 1-1.”
